Pump.fun earns millions while most tracked memecoins sit far below peak

Pump.fun made about $18.6 million in protocol revenue in a week, while a Talos study found 81% of tracked memecoins fell at least 90% from their highs.

Pump.fun, a Solana platform for launching tokens, generated about $18.6 million in protocol revenue in the seven days to Oct. 7, according to DefiLlama data cited by CryptoSlate. Over 30 days, traders paid about $184.5 million in fees, with protocol revenue of about $60.7 million.

At the same time, a Talos study reported that among a chosen set of memecoins, 81% had fallen by at least 90% from their all-time highs. Talos examined 150 memecoins for survival and 151 for returns, and only included tokens with prices on at least one centralized exchange. CryptoSlate noted that this filter favors more successful coins, so the failure rate across all launched tokens may be higher.

Recoveries were rare. Just five of the 151 coins in the return sample stayed above their first-day price, and the typical (median) token hit its high roughly 17 days after it started trading on an exchange. Talos also found that about two-thirds of the Solana memecoins in its review never staged a meaningful second run.

Pump.fun co-founder Alon Cohen said more than 140,000 users shared about $4.46 million in a single recent 24-hour window through rewards and creator fees. CryptoSlate pointed out that these payouts go to specific groups, such as token creators and eligible promoters, and do not automatically reach everyone holding a token.

Why it matters for beginners

A launchpad earns fees whenever people trade, whether tokens rise or crash, so its income says little about a buyer's chances. Memecoins usually have no business behind them and depend on attention, which tends to move on quickly. If you choose to trade them, use only money you can afford to lose completely, and remember that a low price per coin does not make a token cheap.
