Ethereum's Sepolia testnet activates Glamsterdam with a bigger gas limit

Ethereum's Sepolia test network turned on the Glamsterdam upgrade with a gas limit near 200 million. The main network stays at 60 million for now.

Ethereum's Sepolia test network switched on the Glamsterdam upgrade on October 6 and began creating blocks whose gas limit is nearly 200 million, Decrypt reported. That is more than three times the 60 million limit on Ethereum's main network.

Gas measures the computing work needed to process activity on Ethereum, and the gas limit sets how much of that work fits in one block. A higher limit does not mean three times as many transactions. It gives blocks extra room when demand rises, which can help keep fees from jumping when the network is busy. In a snapshot of 25 blocks taken on October 8, blocks used only about 24% to 43% of the space available.

Bigger blocks put more strain on validators, the computers that lock up ETH as collateral to check and confirm blocks. That is why the limit has been raised in small steps. It went from 30 million to 32 million after a validator vote in February 2025 and later reached 60 million during 2025. The Fusaka upgrade, live since December 3, 2025, made 60 million the default.

Sepolia is a practice network whose tokens have no real value, so developers can test changes safely. No date has been set for the Hoodi testnet or for a mainnet upgrade, which means the 60 million limit on Ethereum's main network stays in place for the time being.

Why it matters for beginners

Testnet upgrades are rehearsals that let developers find problems before changes reach the network that holds real money. A higher gas limit on the main network could eventually mean more room during busy periods, but nothing changes there until a separate upgrade is scheduled and activated. Be wary of anyone who says you must do something with your ETH because of a testnet upgrade, since that is a common scam angle.
